Employee Performance
Okay, there are two distinct components to this thing called employee performance management:
- Feedback and rewards
- Talent Building
First, feedback and rewards. We are extremely critical of traditional performance appraisal systems that are painful and distracting to managers and employees alike. Far worse, most are useless in changing employee behaviors for better job performance. And the problem has nothing to do with forms, competency models, score guides or appraisal documents; but everything to do with ongoing communication, deliberate knowlege sharing, immediate feedback and effective rewards. So that’s where Switch HR shines the light:
- A simple feedback and reinforcement methodology firmly entrenched from the date of hire and baked into every training and performance management initiative. Training, feedback, reinforcement and rerwards must be integrated.
- Voluntary, self-initiated feedback for those who want it at any time
- Simple, automated data collection, customized to each position. Forms take three minutes to complete, not hours.
- Multi-rater and 360 feedback for developmental purposes only
- Immediate incentives and rewards to reinforce desired behavior
Now about Talent Building. This is a big topic and a key subject of our Performance Management Blog posts. So go there for details. First, you will learn that Talent Building is NOT recruiting. Second, you will discover that high-performance standards among executive leadership are crucial. Third, churn via desired strategic turnover is good and enables a constant talent pipeline into the organization. Fourth, HR programs and rewards must focus on the top 20% of highest job performers. Fifth, a Strategic Communications infrastructure is required. And number six, knowlege sharing is a business imperative and managers and employees who don’t practice it are failing at a key and universal job responsibility.
